Jewellery Care Instructions
With the right care, your JhumkaStore pieces will stay beautiful for years. Follow these simple tips to maintain the shine and longevity of your handcrafted jewellery.
General Care Tips
Store Separately
Keep each piece in its own pouch or compartment to prevent scratching and tangling.
Avoid Water
Remove jewellery before bathing, swimming, or washing hands to prevent tarnish and discolouration.
No Perfume Contact
Apply perfume and hairspray before wearing jewellery. Chemicals cause rapid fading of plating.
Last On, First Off
Put jewellery on after getting dressed and take it off before bed to minimise wear and tear.
Avoid Sweat
Remove jewellery before exercising. Sweat accelerates tarnishing, especially on plated pieces.
Clean Gently
Wipe with a soft, dry microfibre cloth after each use. Avoid abrasive cloths or harsh cleaners.
Do's & Don'ts
Do
- Store in the provided velvet pouch when not in use
- Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing
- Keep in a cool, dry place away from sunlight
- Apply perfume before putting on jewellery
- Handle with clean, dry hands
- Keep pieces in separate pouches to avoid scratching
Don't
- Wear while bathing, swimming, or washing dishes
- Expose to perfume, hairspray, or deodorant directly
- Wear during exercise or any strenuous activity
- Use ultrasonic cleaners or harsh chemicals
- Sleep while wearing jewellery
- Expose to direct sunlight for extended periods
Gold-Plated Jewellery
Our gold-plated pieces use a base metal (usually brass or copper) coated with a layer of gold. The plating can fade over time with improper care. Follow these specific tips:
- Polish with a jewellery polishing cloth (not ordinary cloth) to restore shine
- Never use toothpaste, baking soda, or vinegar — they will strip the plating
- If cleaning is needed, use a soft cloth dampened with plain water and dry immediately
- Store in an airtight zip-lock bag with an anti-tarnish strip when not in use for extended periods
Lifespan tip: With good care, gold-plated jewellery retains its finish for 1–3 years. The thicker the plating (micron count), the longer it lasts. Our pieces use high-quality plating for maximum durability.
Kundan Jewellery
Kundan jewellery features uncut gemstones set in gold foil — a traditional art form from Rajasthan. The stones are held in place by lacquer and foil, making them sensitive to moisture and impact.
- Never immerse kundan jewellery in water — it will loosen the stones and dissolve the lacquer
- Wipe gently with a dry, lint-free cloth — never rub vigorously
- Avoid contact with oils, lotions, and perfumes
- Store flat — do not stack or pile kundan pieces on top of each other
- If a stone appears loose, stop wearing and contact us — do not try to press it back yourself
- Keep away from extreme heat (direct sunlight, car dashboards in summer)
Oxidised Silver Jewellery
Oxidised silver has a beautiful dark, antique finish achieved through a controlled oxidation process. This finish is intentional and is part of the design. Here's how to maintain it:
- Do not polish with a silver polishing cloth — it will remove the oxidised finish
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth to remove surface dust
- If cleaning is needed, use a mild soap solution with a soft toothbrush, rinse and dry thoroughly
- Avoid silver dips or chemical cleaners — they strip the dark finish permanently
- The oxidised finish may lighten slightly over time with normal wear — this adds to its vintage charm
- Store in an airtight pouch to slow down further oxidation (if desired)
Storage Tips
Proper storage is just as important as how you wear your jewellery. Here are the best ways to store your pieces:
Use the velvet pouch that comes with your order for day-to-day storage
Use a jewellery box with separate compartments for different pieces
Keep in a cool, dry place — avoid bathrooms due to humidity
Avoid direct sunlight — UV rays can dull gemstones and fade plating
